British Canoeing Sea Kayak Award

We are pleased to be able to offer our advanced beginner and intermediate kayakers the opportunity to take the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Award class with Bonnie Perry. Bonnie is a long-time instructor at the WMCKA symposium and is certified as a BCU 5-Star paddler/ Advanced Sea Leader, Advanced Water Sea Kayak Coach and Performance Level Coach,  UKCC Level 3 Sea Kayak Coach, and ACA Level 4 Open-Water Instructor Trainer.  She paddles with both a Euro and Traditional blade.

Description and Everything you wanted to know about the British Canoeing Sea Kayak Award (A similar and much updated BCU 3 * Class) can be found HERE.

An ideal candidate for this class is someone who is has had several other kayak classes, has paddled their boat in bumpy water and would like to become proficient in handling your boat happily in three-foot breaking waves, and winds of about 20 mph.

You will be working on edging, linking maneuvering strokes, lots and lots of rescues, forward stroke, reverse, some towing, and scenarios.  Expect full days on the water, spending two days on Duck Pond and on Lake Michigan.  It is possible, depending upon conditions, to do an assessment–but we will need the conditions and they frequently do not occur in May on Lake Michigan.

At the end of the class, Bonnie will give you a short review of where she believes your skills are relative to the award and what areas where you may wish to focus training and instruction.

Bring a helmet, have a tow belt, and a smile

Please note:

The British Canoeing Sea Kayak Award course is one of the courses with the highest demand and the least number of slots available.  Class size is limited to 8 paddlers.  WMCKA will maintain a list of provisional participants in order of payment received.  Participants registering without payment will be placed on a Wait List until payment is received. When payment is received after signing up the paddler will be registered in the order of payment.

A participant review will be held on the evening of Friday, May 27th to ensure that each paddler has appropriate skills and equipment for attending the class.

Participation is at the discretion of the instructor and participants remaining on the Wait List or without the appropriate skills or equipment are allowed to participate in all of the other WMCKA Symposium classes.

Class cost is covered with your Symposium registration fee.
